Better is A POSITIVELY GOOD PRODUCTIONWritten, designed, Produced, Edited, and the brainchildn of: Carole C. Good and Jasmine Leilani

"The most universal quality is diversity." Cultures provide people with ways of thinking-- ways of seeing, hearing, and interpreting the world. Demographers tell us that our society is becoming increasingly racially and ethnically diverse. Think about it: The active presence of God in all things created extends to all space and every place. |

Effective communication with people
of different cultures is especially challenging.
When the languages are different,
and translation has to be used to communicate,
the potential for misunderstandings increases.
The same words can mean different things
to people from different cultures,
even when they talk the "same" language.
Take Time To Communicate Effectively
Communicating with people
from different cultures
means that we need to understand
their world, their values, beliefs,
and customs.
This allows for better understanding
of different cultures and an understanding
of potential cross-cultural
misunderstandings.
Each culture has its own way of communicating,
eating, sharing, and showing affection. Most
cultures remain intact by passing along their
nuances, habits, and sayings for hundreds of
years, with only slight variations occurring
within each generation.
Communication is not only about the words we speak,
we also need to pay attention to:
- Body language
- Tone
- How things are said
- What is not said
- The cultural meaning of what is said and how it is said.
-
Cultural differences effect communication
on all levels.
Cross-cultural environments requires
more attention.
Building strong cross-cultural skills starts with
learning to listen to all aspects of the
communication.
When communicating with someone from a
different culture we need to put aside
our busy habits and take in as much
information as we can.
We can do this by simply being ourselves,
with quiet confidence,
discreet respect, and an attentive presence.

May we become more appreciative of the rich diversity
of Our International/universal heritages.
